LDCC Office of Student Retention and Engagement
Single Stop USA saw the need, especially in community colleges who have open access and tuition rates much lower than four-year colleges, to provide services to students who qualify because of their low-income status. A large percentage of community college students are first generation students who come from low-income families. These students often work twenty hours or more per week to support their families while attending college, which can often lead to a higher dropout rate.
Single Stop USA, in partnership with Louisiana Delta Community College, allows students to explore support programs that can help reduce barriers to success.
- S.N.A.P. (food stamps) Supplements the food budget of families in need.
- W.I.C. Supplemental nutrition program for women, infants, and children.
- Medicaid Provides health coverage to low-income people.
- E.I.T.C. Tax Credit for low-to-moderate-income working individuals.
- Financial Counseling For budgeting and planning.
- FREE Tax Filing

Community College Clothing Closets play a vital role in supporting students in various ways. Louisiana Delta Community College established the “Shine Like a Knight” clothing closet to assist students with securing professional clothing.
We want to ensure that all students are successful and here are the ways that establishing a clothing closet can assist with student success and retention.
Cost Savings: Many students face financial constraints and may struggle to afford professional attire. A clothing closet provides access to essential clothing items at no cost, helping students save money that can be allocated to other necessities such as tuition, books, and living expenses.
- Interview Preparedness: Access to professional attire is crucial for students preparing for job interviews, internships, and networking events. Proper attire can significantly impact first impressions and improve the chances of securing employment.
- Career Readiness: Dressing appropriately for various professional settings is an essential part of career readiness. Clothing closets help students feel confident and presentable, which can enhance their overall performance and professional demeanor.
- Leveling the Playing Field: Clothing closets promote equity by ensuring that all students, regardless of their financial background, have access to appropriate attire. This helps level the playing field and provides equal opportunities for student success.
- Boosting Confidence: Wearing suitable attire can boost a student's confidence and self-esteem, which can positively impact their academic performance and social interactions.
- Reducing Stigma: Providing a discreet and supportive environment for students to access clothing helps reduce the stigma associated with financial hardship.
- Immediate Support: In cases of emergency or unexpected circumstances (e.g., natural disasters, sudden financial crises), clothing closets provide immediate support to students in need.
- Building Community: These initiatives foster a sense of community and support, as they are typically run by volunteers and rely on donations from faculty, staff, students, and local businesses. This engagement strengthens campus and local community ties.
Louisiana Delta Community College Shine Like a Knight clothing closet is an essential resource that supports students' financial, professional, and personal development, while contributing to a more equitable, inclusive, and sustainable campus environment that ultimately aids in student success and well-being.

The LDCC Promise Pantry Food Pantry is an invaluable resource for community college students, providing numerous benefits that support overall well-being and academic success.
The mission of LDCC Promise Pantry is to provide students and the campus community with the promise of nourishment and hope by providing both perishable and non-perishable necessities.
The Promise Pantry is an avenue to provide:
- Basic Needs Fulfillment: Many community college students face food insecurity, struggling to access sufficient and nutritious food. A food pantry ensures that students have access to essential food items, helping to meet their basic needs.
- Assist with Reducing Hunger: By providing free or low-cost food options, the pantry helps to alleviate hunger among students, allowing them to focus on their studies instead of worrying about where their next meal will come from.
- Improved Concentration: Proper nutrition is crucial for cognitive function and concentration. Students who have access to adequate food are more likely to perform better academically.
- Increased Attendance and Retention: Students who do not have to worry about food are more likely to attend classes regularly and stay enrolled, leading to higher retention and graduation rates.
- Nutritional Support: Access to healthy and nutritious food options supports students' physical health, reducing the risk of malnutrition and related health issues.
- Increased Mental Health: Alleviating food insecurity can also have a positive impact on students' mental health, reducing stress and anxiety associated with hunger and financial instability.
- Assistance Supporting Vulnerable Populations: Food pantries ensure that all students, regardless of their economic background, have access to food. This promotes equity and inclusion on campus.
- Foster Community: Food pantries often rely on donations and volunteers from the campus and local community. This fosters a sense of solidarity and mutual support among students, faculty, and staff.
- Assistance with Immediate Relief: In times of crisis or unexpected financial hardship, the pantry provides immediate food assistance, ensuring that students have a safety net to fall back on.

Louisiana Delta Community College is committed to the success of its students by providing an environment conducive to teaching and learning. To ensure that every student takes full advantage of the educational opportunities, the College has implemented a retention program supported through an Early Alert program called Knight Alert.
Students who could use additional support will be contacted by a Knight Alert representative to help the student navigate educational and personal obstacles.
The goal of the Knight Alert program is to work with students individually and assist in a success plan that will aid in overcoming any barrier to college success. The system allows faculty to be proactive, supportive, and involved in facilitating the academic components of student retention through early detection and intervention of students who are experiencing problems. Or allows the student to submit themselves to work with the success team.
Who Can Benefit from Knight Alert?
There are many reasons that a student might be submitted to Knight Alert: we work with students who have a range of academic and personal barriers that prevent them from being successful. Some of the most common reasons for submitting a student to Early Alert include:
- Excessive absences and/or tardiness
- Needs tutoring
- Has low test and/or quiz scores | Not completing homework
- Knowledge of personal or family difficulties (i.e. financial, death in the family, etc.)
- Change in demeanor
It is imperative to note that Knight Alert cannot serve as a surrogate for good classroom management, nor are we disciplinary in nature. We have developed a set of best practices for using Knight Alert to help your students be successful:
- Knight Alert works best when used early! Submissions in the first four weeks of class are most likely to result in a successful outcome for your students, and two weeks for eight-week classes.
- Let your student know the nature of your concern for them and that you will be submitting them to Knight Alert, and they will be contacted by the office of Student Retention and Engagement to follow-up.
- Include Knight Alert in your syllabus.
- Let us know when our feedback doesn’t match up with what you’re seeing in class
This Student Need Assessment focuses on identifying the critical needs of students that impact retention and academic success. The evaluation covers key areas including housing, tutoring, transportation, academic, counseling, food, and clothing. The goal is to understand the extent to which these factors affect student persistence and to develop targeted interventions that support students' overall well-being.
