Medical Lab Assistant
Certificate of Technical Studies

Students enrolled in the medical lab technician program at LDCC will be eligible for the phlebotomy and medical lab assistant certificate of technical studies after two semesters. This certificate is a 27 credit hour that allows students to sit for both the phlebotomy and medical lab assistant national exams.

After these two semesters, students will be eligible to take two nationally recognized exams and begin working immediately as a certified medical laboratory assistant (CMLA) or certified phlebotomy technician (CPT). The certified medical laboratory assistant certification is offered by the American medical technologists (AMT) and the certified phlebotomy technician certification is offered by the national health career association (NHA).

What do MLA's do?

Medical laboratory assistants are responsible for gathering and handling samples for testing, such as blood and tissue samples, from patients. Their tasks involve logging samples, preparing and conducting tests, recording data, and maintaining the cleanliness and sterilization of equipment.

Daily responsibilities include:

● Processing clinical laboratory specimens
● Conducting routine and specialized tests
● Preparing and staining slides for analysis
● Performing phlebotomy, recording testing information
● Cleaning and restocking the lab facility
● Managing inventory by ordering necessary lab supplies

***The MLT program has a competitive admissions process. Acceptance into the college does not guarantee admission to the program.

An American Medical Technologists (AMT) Approved Program
